Whether you’re paddling out at Huntington Beach for the first time or you’ve been surfing Trestles since you were a kid, having the right gear makes every session better. This guide covers everything you need to surf Southern California in 2026 — built around what actually works in our local conditions.

The Surfboard

SoCal waves vary wildly by season and location. From the mushy beach breaks of Santa Monica to the powerful points at Rincon, you need a board that handles range. For most guys surfing SoCal:

  • Beginners: A soft-top longboard (9’0″) is the single best investment. Catch more waves, learn faster, and don’t destroy the lineup.
  • Intermediate: A funboard or fish (6’6″–7’2″) covers 80% of SoCal days with speed and forgiveness.
  • Advanced: A shortboard (5’10″–6’4″) for punchy beach break, plus a longer step-up for winter swells.

For boards, we recommend checking Jack’s Surfboards (one of the best surf shops in the country, based in Huntington Beach) and Cleanline Surf for a wide selection at fair prices.

The Wetsuit

SoCal water temps range from around 57°F in January to 72°F in September. Here’s what to wear by season:

  • Summer (June–October): Boardshorts only, or a 2mm spring suit for early mornings.
  • Shoulder season (April–May, November): 3/2mm full suit.
  • Winter (December–March): 4/3mm with booties if you’re heading to Malibu or north.

Top picks: Patagonia Yulex wetsuits (sustainable and well-made), O’Neill Hyperfreak series (excellent stretch at a mid-range price), and RVCA x Channel Islands collab suits for the style-conscious surfer.

Fins, Wax & Leashes

FCS II and Futures are the two dominant fin systems — pick based on your board’s box. For all-around SoCal surfing, a medium-stiffness thruster covers most conditions. For wax, use warm/tropical in summer and cool wax from November through April. Match your leash length to your board length and replace it annually.

Sun Protection

SoCal sun is no joke. Use reef-safe mineral sunscreen on your face every session. Read our full breakdown in 5 Reef-Safe Sunscreens Every Surfer Should Use.

That’s the core kit. Start with the board and wetsuit, then build out from there.
